Talewind (2007)
Exhibition details
The work explores the myths and histories of the early seafarers who entered the oceans at great risk to explore and trade with countries that were often unknown to them. There has always been a tension between ‘analytical history’ and ‘narrative history’. From the stories of Marco Polo (‘The Travels’), who was perhaps the first to suggest that a continent lay South to ‘balance the earth’ (Australia), to more recently, ‘1421 – The Year China Discovered the World’ by Gavin Menzies. Artisans are analytical in the process of constructing a work, making many aesthetic decisions, but can only be subjective in the narratives they portray.
