Early work (1970s)

Exhibition details

I studied at East Sydney Technical College (now the National Art School) from 1970 – 1972. The sculpture department taught basic studio skills; modeling, casting, life drawing and the latest trends in constructing sculpture. The main influences came from Anthony Caro and David Smith's work – but there was many arguments about 'conceptual art'. The teacher that influenced me most at the time was Peter Powditch – he taught painting as part of the general course within the sculpture department. He encouraged students to find their own path. In the early work (as in 'Pond Pump') the mixture of tough clarity with personal subject matter comes from his teaching.
